The icon of East Anglian Christianity for over 900 years, Norwich city’s spectacular Romanesque Cathedral is open all day, free of charge. Set in the beautiful, tranquil grounds of a medieval precinct, the awe-inspiring building boasts the largest cloisters in England, the second tallest spire in the country and an amazing 1,200 stone roof bosses.
The Cathedral hosts a wide variety of exhibitions, orchestral concerts, choral concerts, jazz ensembles and lectures.
Public guided tours run all year round from 10.45am-2.15pm Monday to Saturday. Tours last one hour and are free of charge.
Medieval Mysteries Tours offer an exciting insight into the lost and hidden meanings and symbolism of medieval imagery. Visitors learn about medieval man's religious beliefs, his regard for nature and his sense of humour with the aid of beasts, monsters and sinners splendidly depicted in the medieval misericords and Roof Bosses of the Cathedral.
Equally impressive is St John’s Cathedral, the second largest Roman Catholic Cathedral in the UK, built in 1200. Along with its massive nave and dominating tower, one of the glories of this majestic building is its stone carving and mass of mouldings, flying buttresses, pinnacles and gargoyles.
Norwich is also home to over 30 medieval churches within the city walls alone including St Peter Mancroft, the largest church in Norwich which towers imposingly over the market place in the heart of the city.
Built in the 15th Century St Peter Mancroft has a Norman foundation dating from 1075, a 1463 font, a 1573 Flemish tapestry and medieval glass.
