Bring historyvividly back to life
One of the City's most famous landmarks and certainly one of the most popular attractions in Norwich, Norwich Castle was built by the Normans as a Royal Palace 900 years ago.
Used as a prison from the 14th Century the Castle became a museum in 1894 and is now home to some of the most outstanding collections of fine art, archaeology and natural history. In the Boudica gallery, visitors discover about East Anglia’s very own Queen Boudica and her Iceni tribe and admire stunning displays of Iceni treasure.
The new Anglo-Saxon and Viking gallery tells the story of life in the region after the collapse of the Roman Empire and reveals how archaeologists have pieced together evidence to discover the social, economic and political life that existed a thousand years ago.
The Art gallery is a celebration of 17th-20th century masterpieces, displaying stunning English watercolours, Dutch landscapes and modern British paintings.
Deep in the Norman keep, models, video and sound brings history vividly back to life. Visitors can experience the atmosphere of an Egyptian tomb with its ancient mummies, wonder at Viking treasures (many of which were found locally), explore a remarkable reconstruction of an Anglo-Saxon burial site and ride on a re-creation of an Iceni warrior’s chariot.
Norwich Castle will capture the imagination and intrigue of visitors of all ages!
Not for the faint-hearted, Dungeon tours take visitors deep below the castle into a maze of early medieval cellars used to incarcerate criminals. Visitors learn about the history of crime and punishment, hear extraordinary tales about the appalling prison conditions and witness horrifying instruments of torture including a ducking stool, scold’s bridle and gibbet iron. The tour also includes a sinister collection of Victorian death heads - plaster cast impressions of locally hanged criminals!
