Discover real Norfolkin the bustling market towns
Discover ‘real’ Norfolk by exploring the bustling, market towns.
The ancient saxon town of Downham Market is a delightful place for a day trip. Downham Market has a wealth of interesting historic buildings. In the main square, the gothic, black and white wrought iron clock tower towers imposingly over the surrounding town and network of waterways. St Edmunds Parish Church, the town’s oldest building and the Town Hall, built in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s jubilee are a must see. On Fridays and Saturdays the town is full of the hustle of bustle one would expect on market days with stalls selling local produce such as jams, juices, cheese and breads and much more. The town also holds a number of events throughout the year including its annual festival and carnival, St Winnold's Fayre, a music festival and even a water festival with Dragon Boat Racing, sailing displays, free arts events on the town square and plenty to entertain children.
Similarly, nestled in beautiful North Norfolk countryside, the pretty Georgian market town of Holt is brimming with charm. Rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1708, the town is home to some colourful Georgian buildings and a parish church that is open to visitors. A must during your visit to Holt has to be a journey on the North Norfolk Railway. Also known as the Poppy Line, a steam train takes its passengers from Holt station through some of North Norfolk’s most stunning countryside, designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, to the Victorian seaside town of Sheringham. Holt is also a great place for shopping. With a variety of arts and crafts galleries, charming cafes and speciality food shops there is plenty to tempt tourists.
